Prompting AI After Context is Provided

You have given your AI pages of information. Now you need to ask for something specific. Your next prompt should be different than if the AI had no context.

Why Your Prompt Changes with Context

When an AI has no context, your first prompt must include all necessary background. This is often long. It might contain links, copied text, or specific instructions on how to interpret information.

Once the AI has the context, it already understands the subject. You do not need to re-explain the basics. Your prompts can be shorter and more focused. This saves you time and often leads to better results.

Three Effective Prompt Patterns

These patterns help you get specific outputs from the AI when it already has your content. Each pattern builds on the idea of targeted extraction or transformation.

**1. Summarize for a specific audience or purpose:** Ask the AI to condense information. Tell it who the summary is for. Tell it why they need it. For example, 'Summarize this for a high school student needing to understand the main points of renewable energy.'

**2. Extract specific data or facts:** Direct the AI to pull out exact pieces of information. Be precise about what you need. For example, 'Extract all dates mentioned in the text and the event associated with each.'

**3. Compare or contrast information:** If the content includes multiple items, ask the AI to show their differences or similarities. Specify the criteria for comparison. For example, 'Compare the benefits of solar power versus wind power as described in the article, focusing on cost and environmental impact.'

Specify the Answer Format You Want

Thinking about how you will use the AI's answer helps you prompt better. Do you need a list? A table? A short paragraph? Tell the AI upfront.

Adding format instructions helps the AI structure its response. This makes the output immediately useful. Examples include: 'Provide the answer as a bulleted list.', 'Format this as a two-column table with 'Feature' and 'Description' headers.', or 'Give me a single paragraph summary, no more than 75 words.'

Follow Up Without Re-Pasting

A key benefit of providing context is the ability to have a conversation. You can ask follow-up questions. You do not need to resubmit the original information.

If you use a tool like LocalBridge, the context remains in the chat. You can ask 'What about X?' or 'Can you elaborate on Y?' The AI will refer to the content you already shared. This keeps the conversation flowing and efficient.

Common questions

Should I always provide all context in the first prompt?
It is best practice to provide all necessary context upfront. This establishes a clear base for the AI. Future prompts can then build on this established knowledge.
What if the AI forgets the context I provided?
Most modern AIs maintain context for a certain number of turns or tokens. If the conversation becomes very long, the AI might 'forget' earlier parts. If this happens, you may need to re-introduce key details or restart with the full context.
Can I ask the AI to rewrite parts of the text?
Yes, once the AI has the text, you can ask it to rewrite sections. Specify the tone, length, or target audience for the rewrite. For example, 'Rewrite the second paragraph in a more formal tone.'
How long should my follow-up prompts be?
Follow-up prompts can be very short. They leverage the existing context. Focus on asking precisely what you need next, without repeating information the AI already has.
