Glossary

What is content script?

Extension code that runs inside a web page to read or change it.

A content script shares the page's DOM but not its JavaScript variables, an isolation boundary that keeps page code and extension code from interfering.

It cannot make arbitrary cross-origin requests itself; it messages the background worker, which holds the broader permissions.

Content scripts only run on pages the extension is permitted to touch, which is why browser settings pages and store pages are always off limits.

In practice

Reading the article body from a tab is a content script job; sending that text onward is a background worker job.
