What is dom?

The live structure of a web page as the browser holds it in memory.

The Document Object Model is the tree of elements a browser builds from HTML and then mutates as scripts run.

Reading the DOM rather than the original HTML is what lets an extension capture pages that are rendered entirely by JavaScript.

It also explains a common limit: content that has not rendered yet, because it is below the fold or behind a tab, is not in the tree to read.

In practice

A dashboard that draws its table after an API call only becomes readable once that call has finished.
