Glossary
What is extension permissions?
The specific browser capabilities an extension asks you to approve.
Permissions are declared up front and shown at install. Broad ones such as host access to all sites are the ones worth reading carefully.
Narrow alternatives exist: activeTab grants access to the current tab only when you click the extension, which is far less invasive than blanket host access.
Reviewing what a permission is used for, rather than whether it sounds scary, is the useful test.
In practice
Reading tab titles needs the tabs permission; reading the text inside those tabs needs scripting as well.
